Water Tower 129's History
1930s The site for the Darwin RAAF Base was selected in 1937.
1939 War declared on September 1.
1940 Tower finished construction.
1941 Pearl Harbour bombed.
1942 Darwin bombed on February 19 commenced with 46 raids between then and November 1948.
1945 Japan capitulates after atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima.
Civil aerodrome at Parap clses, and civil operations are relocated to the RAAF base.
1950 The Department of Civil Aviation takes over air traffic control, and occupies Building 129 control cabin together with RAAF personnel.
1958 A new control tower is constructed, and Building 129 control ceases to be used.
2008 Tower is relocated to the Australian Aviation Heritage Centre site.
